Atlantic Paper and the Environment

Atlantic Paper endeavors to save our planet in every which way possible and is committed to producing environmentally safe products. Our paper comes from paper mills that produce recycled raw material. Understanding the importance of recycling is of essence to us and we strongly believe in acting upon this principal.

Why is it important to us

According to the U.S Environmental Protection Agency, approximately 35 percent of the municipal solid waste stream (MSW) is made up of paper and paperboard products. In fact, paper makes up the largest portion of the municipal waste stream and is also one of the most recovered materials. It has been estimated that recycling half the world's paper would avoid the harvesting of 20 million acres of forestland. That is HUGE! We are proud and are honored to be part of this great act.

Facts about Paper Recycling

  • Each ton (2000 pounds) of recycled paper can save 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, three cubic yards of landfill space, 4000 kilowatts of energy, and 7000 gallons of water. This represents a 64% energy savings, a 58% water savings, and 60 pounds less of air pollution.

  • Every ton of paper recycled saves more than 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space.

  • The average American uses seven trees a year in paper, wood, and other products made from trees. This amounts to about 2,000,000,000 trees per year!

  • Americans use 85,000,000 tons of paper a year; about 680 pounds per person.

  • The amount of wood and paper we throw away each year is enough to heat 50,000,000 homes for 20 years.

And lastly the impact recycling has today on our economy:

"Recycling a ton of waste has twice the economic impact of buying it in the ground. In addition, recycling one additional ton of waste will pay $101 more in salaries and wages, produce $275 more in goods and services, and generate $135 more in sales than disposing of it in a landfill".
